About Us

A non-profit organisation to increase awareness around health technology as a future career path for young women. Many young women are inspired by health sciences but shy away from becoming healthcare workers because of rational fears such as blood and facing death.

However; health is not only a science. There is a whole technological industry that allows the healthcare sector to function that young people are not exposed to. Curated women strive to change this narrative and increase the number of young black females in this sector.

According to UNICEF in 2016 – An educated female population increases a country's productivity and fuels economic growth. Some countries lose more than $1 billion a year by failing to educate girls to the same level as boys.

Curated Women as an organisation believes girls have the same right to education as boys. Educated girls can make informed choices - and form a far better range of options. Educating girls saves lives and builds stronger families, communities and economies.

The organisation seeks to increase awareness and information around health technology to all young people from marginalized communities across South Africa to access and succeed in post-schooling Health Technology opportunities, both male and female. There will however be an increased focus and mentorship program for the girl child. .

Programme 1: Incubation process

The organisation facilitates skills training for learners through after school workshops on research methodology skills. This programme enables learners to use STEM concepts learnt within the schooling curriculum and beyond to apply these STEM principles; which up to this point are theoretical; into solving real life problems ultimately sparking an interest in associated STEM careers.

Programme 2: CW Innovation Clubs

Beyond the incubation process the learners that have participated throughout the programme initiate and govern the CW innovation clubs. Club activities include:

• Intro to coding

• Creative & Scientific Writing

• Debating & Public Speaking

• Career Pathing & Talent Management

• Urban crop management

• Industry exposure through conferences and industry visits

Why health and technology?

According to the World Health Organisation, health technology is defined as the "application of organised knowledge and skills in the form of devices, medicines, vaccines, procedures, and systems developed to solve a health problem and improve quality of lives".

This includes any organisational and or computer-supported information systems used in the healthcare industry, to treat or care for patients.

This industry has lagged drastically compared to other sectors as it has functioned for many centuries using pre-digital protocols and subsequently patients suffered from inefficient and faulty clinical systems, processes, and conditions.

This industry has also lagged as most innovations have originated from medical doctors, who are primarily clinicians, and lack the necessary IT, engineering and pharmaceutical knowledge to fully imagine any innovative concepts.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is evolving at an exponential rather than a linear pace. Due to the advancement of technologies, people will be more likely to go to hospitals for major surgeries or critical illnesses. In the future, instead, robots will deliver medication, take care of patients, and administer the system. In the future, electronic health records will look different. Healthcare providers will be able to enter the notes via speech-to-text transcriptions in real-time.

We stand on the brink of a technological revolution that will fundamentally alter the way we live, work, and relate to one another. In its scale, scope, and complexity, the transformation will be unlike anything humankind has experienced before.

It is thus imperative that we not only mentally prepare our youth for this new age profession but also ensure South Africa starts producing Health Technologists and Innovators of our own.

The notion that the only way to impact a person's life is if one is their doctor is false. We are moving into a world where the role of humans in healthcare is not just at a doctor-patient level. .
